As a general rule there was a large prejudice between the Northern and Southern styles in China. An individual trained in the styles of one was not likely to be trained in the styles of the other. But, Sensei lived essentially two seperate lives in China. The first as a member of a family, as a child and teenager, when he studied the Northern Style of Hsing I and most probably one which was the family style of his mother's family. Later in his life, during WWII, he assumed a Chinese identity and lived in the Southern parts of China, where he studied the Southern style of White Crane, his knowledge of the Nahate based on this style may have gained him access to a teacher.
Linage of Tukerii Sensei
Ryu Ryukyu Sensei, of Fukien Province, was teacher of Fukien Style Chinese Boxing, most probably White Crane Style to:
Higashionna Kanryo Sensei, combined Naha-te with Fukien Style and taught: Miyagi Chojun Sensei, and very possibly Tukerii Sensei.
Miyagi Chojun Sensei (Naha-te, Gojuryu), Mabuni Kenwa Sensei (Shuri-te), Hanshiro Chomo Sensei (Shorinryu, Shitoryu) were instructors to Tukerii Sensei in Okinawa.
One of the names (see about the founder link from Home Page) which was possibly the true Okinawan name of the founder, was found listed in one text as a student of Higashionna Kanryo Sensei. Based on the date of the death of Higaonna Kanryo Sensei, and the age of Tukerii Sensei, it is possible that Tukerii Sensei was at some point a student of Higashionna Kanryo Sensei, but during a period when Miyagi Chojun may have been the senior student of Higashionna Sensei and doing much of the teaching. This has yet to be confirmed. Based on Tukerii Sensei's own references to various Tode masters as "Sensei", his most common use of this reference was to Miyagi Chojun. This possibly may have been no more than a polite and respectful acknowledgement of Miyagi Chojun as being the legitimate heir to Higshiaonna Kanryo, and thus acknowledgement of Miyagi's leadership of the style of Higashionna. Generally his other references were to Miyagi Chojun Sensei, Mabuni Kenwa Sensei, and Hanshiro Chomo Sensei.
Northern Chinese Style of Kenpo, Instructor Unknown, Probably family style of Tukerii Sensei's mother, Possibly some variation of Hsing-I. Studied during his teen years
Southern Chinese Style of Kenpo, Instuctor Unknown, Studied during WWII years. This style was most probably White Crane, as no other southern Chinese style's influence is visible in Sensei's teachings.
Tukerii Sensei also had exposure to Taekyon and Subakdo, but exact amount of exposure or names of instructors are unknown.
Of those students of Tukerii Sensei who are still alive who received dan grade ranking, all but two have received their current ranking through Charles Bouton, the current President and Headmaster of the Kokusai Dai Ni Gojuryu Karate Kyokai. The two remaining students of Tukerii Sensei who were directly ranked by him are Paul Kenneman and Richard Wicker, both ranked 6th Dan with Kyoshi license. Most of Tukerii Sensei's original students are now, due to advanced age, inactive as teachers and practitioners or dead. Thus, all other current practitioners derive their linage from Charles Bouton. Thus, his linage will be expanded. The other senior students can be found in the Current Black Belt Practitioner Link from the Dai Ni Gojuryu Home Page.
Tukerii sensei taught the Dai Ni Gojuryu system to Charles Bouton.
Charles Bouton was instructed in Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwan by Park Hee Deok and Hwang Se Jin (Jack Hwang).
Charles Bouton was instructed in Tae Kwon Do Chung
Do Kwan by James Toney, Allen Steen, & Richard Jenkins. Bouton considers
James Toney his primary Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Kwan Instructor. Both Toney
and Jenkins were instructed by Allen Steen. Jenkins also held 3rd dan ranking
in Shotokan. Allen Steen was instructed by Jhoon Rhee. (See Allen Steen
